Vitamin D& Immunity
14 Dec 2009
Vitamin D is increasingly being recognized for its
importance in preventing and combating a broad range of
diseases and health conditions. Increasing studies show that
ensuring an adequate supply of Vitamin D is essential to
long term health and vitality. Since the sun cannot be
relied on as the sole source of Vitamin D, supplementation
has an important role to play.
The benefits of Vitamin D are numerous. Apart from being
essential for bone growth, Vitamin D is a potent immune
system modulator, and it plays a role in insulin secretion.
Scientific evidence has shown that is also may prevent
certain autoimmune diseases. Vitamin D deficiency symptoms
are relatively common, as there are few food sources of
Vitamin D. Not all people get adequate exposure to sunlight
and additionally, other factors such as sunscreen use, age,
obesity, and lifestyle can further inhibit or diminish the
beneficial effects of sun exposure.
